Slowly but surely, the long anticipation of the tax card system has now come to an end. As Sultan bin Salim al Habsi, Head of the Tax Authority, announced that the tax card system will be effective from 1 July 2020. Tax experts mentioned that the guidelines for the application will be released shortly. The introduction of the tax card system for all Sultanate taxpayers was mandated by Royal Decree 9/2017.
All contracts, invoices, and official correspondence will have a unique tax identification number on the card. Tax experts commented that “The Unique tax Identification number has to be mentioned on all contracts, invoices, and correspondence of the taxpayer.” The tax expert noted that failure to comply with the provisions relating to the tax card will further result in a fine of up to RO 5,000.
